I got an award!

Balancing school, an internship, a part-time job, and an obsession dedication to punctuality is tough. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a robot. It requires a great deal of time management and constant priority evaluating. This Wednesday I was awarded the “Ace of Spades” award at work. The award was given to the top eight customer-care performers for 2011. Contrary to the way this has been sounding so far, this post isn’t all about me. I wanted to use this as a discussion about employee relations and the way I feel companies should recognize the people who, even at the bottom of the company hierarchy, dedicate themselves to their work. On the surface, this may seem like totally a human resources function, but I think public relations communicators play a critical role in spreading the recognition throughout an organization.

Back to the Ace award, we were taken to this fancy place called the Summit House in Fullerton. We were able to bring a guest and all the team leads and project managers attended as well. The food was amazing (I had an eggplant crepe) and I had the awesome opportunity of sitting next to the operations manager, which is  basically the guy that manages all the California teams. A little background on my position: I’ve been working at the company, Alta Resources, for about 3 1/2 years. The company is really flexible with my busy student schedule and afforded me the opportunity to buy my first car. Now, don’t get me wrong there are some days that are insanely challenging, but overall I am very grateful to have found Alta at this stage in life.

For an organization to be successful, I think it needs to have a distinct culture. This culture doesn’t need to be super elaborate and globally recognized such as Google’s, it simply needs to foster both company and personal achievements in a consistent and specific way. Alta has adopted the Ace Awards program which a great recognition program that is broken into various levels: Ace of hearts, Ace of diamonds, and Ace of Spades. Each comes with its own rewards. I received the Ace of hearts before and it came with a $50 visa gift card. This award came with a catalog and I’m able to choose a gift from there. (I think I’m going to go with the mountain bike!) Overall, communicating effectively the importance of lower-level employees to your whole organization will develop a positive culture. This communication goes beyond just HR. It needs to be implemented throughout the organization and public relations professionals can help each department develop the best strategies to convey the company’s culture to everyone.

: STATEMENT FROM CEO BEN KEESEY:

invisible:

Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized yesterday suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition. He is now receiving medical care and is focused on getting better. The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested…

This is a release from the Invisible Children’s CEO in response to co-founder Jason Russell’s arrest for lewd acts and vandalism. Seems like a stretch to blame dehydration.

A Change is Coming

I know It’s been a quick minute since my last post. But, that’s because everything has been moving at an insane speed. I’ve started classes and while some courses sound very challenging, I know It’s going to be an amazing semester. Also, on February 13, I will be starting my new internship with 89.3 KPCC!!!! I am so excited and words can’t begin to express how grateful I am to have this opportunity. It is a social media internship and I’ll be helping the social media strategist manage various social media profiles. I’m sure I’ll learn a ton about effective social media best practices as well as the best ways to measure the effectiveness of campaigns. I think that by getting some experience in the journalism field I’ll get great insight into how journalist like to be pitched and more importantly, what they don’t like. With this perspective, it’ll make me a better public relations professional, able to build solid relationships with jounalist. I’m also very excited to see some of the radio personalities I’ve been listening to for years! This is a very exciting time in my life and I will be certain to keep you posted!

Life’s Little Victory of the Day: Sainsbury’s announced today that it was bowing to social network pressure, and renaming its tiger bread “giraffe bread” per Lily Robinson’s suggestion.
The three-year-old wrote the supermarket chain last year to ask why tiger bread is called tiger bread, suggesting it be renamed “giraffe bread” to better match its appearance.
Customer service manager Chris King wrote Lily back to explain that the bread was named by a baker long ago who “thought it looked stripey like a tiger.” However, King sided with Lily, calling her renaming idea “brilliant.”
After thousands of social network users hopped aboard the Giraffe Bread Express, the company caved and decided to move forward with the name change.
“In response to overwhelming customer feedback that our tiger bread has more resemblance to a giraffe, from today we will be changing our tiger bread to giraffe bread and seeing how that goes,” said Sainsbury’s in a statement.
Congrats everybody. We did it.

This, my friends, is awesome.

Here’s a social media cheat sheet. My hope is that if you are using these platforms, you don’t need this….but here it is for those who need to explain these platforms to others easily. ;)

save money is my big one!
Yeah, definitely need to do more of that too. I just paid for my textbooks and parking permit and then sobbed for a few hours. :)
